There can be several reasons why you may be getting slower-than-usual Internet connection speeds. For instance, you could be accessing the web during peak hours. Or something is downloading on your background (check your download manager). If you using the Internet over WiFi check your distance and number of users are connected in given router. There isn’t much you can do in these situations.
But, there are several external factors. If you are getting your internet through phone, faulty phone line can decrease your connectivity speed (you can here little noise in your receiver in this case!)
In fact, if your Internet connection is not stable and keeps dropping off frequently, contact your phone company and ask them for troubleshooting.
You can run some simple tests for fix or increase internet speed.
Check your computer for unwanted guests:
To ensure that none of the viruses or spyware programs are responsible for your slow Internet, open command prompt and run the following command:
” netstat – b – f 5 ”
This will easily help you figure out if any of the programs on your computer are silently connecting to the Internet without your knowledge. If your find any strange process, close it through the Task Manager.
Turn your modem off and on
Sometimes a simple reset can significantly increase your Internet speed. You can also turn your router on and off or unplug-plug your cables, wait for couple of minutes then check.
Clean all the equipments
Regularly check your modem and router cables to ensure solid and clean connections. Maintain proper ventilation around all electrical components to avoid overheating.
Avoid running multiple devices at once
Turn off smartphones, Tablets, Smart TVs, Set-top boxes or other devices that you aren’t currently using. This will definately improve your net speed.
Upgrade your modem or router to a newer model. Plus, use shorter cable to improve your net speed.
Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. A hardwired connection will almost always be faster than a wireless connection.
Contact your Internet service provider (ISP) to find out how much speed you should be getting. While factors such as your distance from the phone exchange may affect your speed, your ISP should be able to give you a ballpark figure.
Don’t fall for the megabit and megabyte trap. Internet Service Providers advertise in megabits, not megabytes.(keep that in mind, otherwise you’ll get confuse in speed)
You can also try programs like TCP Optimizer and Tune-up utilities to fine-tune your Internet connection.
Don’t place any equipments that might interfere with the router, such as chargers, cell phones and microwave ovens. Place your router on wall or shelf, distant from other object might improve your net speed.
